Many have considered psychotherapy as yet the best treatment for depression. Firstly, it eliminates the risks of side effects as to little or no medication is given. Secondly, talk therapy has been the known as the best way to treat depression because of its personal approach.
Types of psychotherapy
Cognitive therapy, behavioral therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical therapy, psychodynamic therapy and interpersonal therapy are some examples of psychotherapies used as treatment for depression. Negative thoughts or cognitive distortions are transformed into positive thoughts or emotions through cognitive therapy. In behavioral therapy, undesired or depressing behaviors are modified or eliminated and focus is put on the constructive or positive behavior that needs to be retained. The third example uses a mixture of the first two approaches.
Dialectical therapy, also known as dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a kind of cognitive-behavioral therapy that attempts to make the patient see the therapist as an ally. The main objective here is to impart skills to cope with stress and develop relationships with other people. Patients are taught how to regulate their emotions by instilling the idea of opposing forces – positive should overpower the negative. The roots of depression are the main focus in psychodynamic therapies. The unresolved conflicts or childhood traumas are discussed and understood, later on solved or accepted. Relationships that cause stress or depression are tackled in interpersonal therapies. You will recognize how your relationships with other people (your spouse or colleagues) trigger your depression and try to change them.
No matter what treatment for depression you opt to try or take, it is important that you have faith in that procedure to make it work otherwise it might just be a waste of time, effort and money.
